What role do houses play in our at-risk world? What innovations can they bring? In Sri Lanka, Palinda Kannangara created the Frame Holiday Structure with a budget of 40,000 dollars. The structure, made with a steel frame, exposed bricks, and wooden floors, can be easily dismantled and moved to adapt to the plain where it stands, which is subject to periodic flooding. In Luciano Lerner Basso’s Casa Fortunata in Brazil, the surrounding nature finds refuge: the structure was built around a tree of a protected species and rests on stilts so as not to disturb the forest floor. The Loom House by Miller Hull, near Seattle, has been called "the most ambitious home renovation in the world from an environmental point of view" for its use of recycled materials and energy efficiency.
