Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes living in small communities scattered across the largest tropical forest in the world, documenting the daily life of the Yanomami, Asháninka, Yawanawá, Suruwahá, Zo'é, Kuikuro, Waurá, Kamayurá, Korubo, Marubo, Awá and Macuxi peoples: their intense family ties, hunting and fishing, the preparation and sharing of meals, their prodigious talent for painting faces and bodies, the importance of their shamans, their dances and their rituals.
